What is a Root Word?

A root word is the main part of a word. It cannot be broken down into smaller parts and still have meaning. You can add beginnings (prefixes) and endings (suffixes) to root words to make new words.

Circle the root word in each of the following words:

1. unhappy

2. jumped

3. quickly

4. playing

Prefixes: A prefix is a letter or group of letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning.

Fill in the blank with the correct prefix (un-, re-, pre-):

1. I want to  read my favorite book. (read again)

 

2. The boy was  happy when his toy broke. (not happy)

 

3. We need to  heat the oven before baking cookies. (heat before)

 

Suffixes: A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

Fill in the blank with the correct suffix (-ing, -ed, -ly):

1. The dog is bark  at the squirrel.

 

2. She walk  to the store yesterday.

 

3. He sang soft  to the baby.

 

Match the word part on the left to make a new word on the right.
