Bessie Coleman was born in Texas in 1892. When she was a little girl, she loved to learn and she loved to read. As she grew up, Bessie heard stories about airplanes and wanted to fly! But it was hard for an African American woman to become a pilot in America during that time. Bessie did not give up. She learned French and moved to France to go to flight school. In 1921, Bessie Coleman became the first African American woman, and the first Native American, to earn a pilot's license. She came back to America and became a famous stunt pilot, performing amazing tricks in her airplane. Bessie Coleman was a brave woman who followed her dreams and showed everyone that anything is possible!
