Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. Pay close attention to how the character develops and changes throughout the story.

Elara had always lived by the rigid traditions of her village, a place nestled deep within the shadowed peaks of the Grey Mountains. Her father, a revered stone carver, had taught her the ancient ways: how to select the purest marble, how to wield the chisel with precision, how to honor the ancestors in every stroke. Elara, however, harbored a secret desire—to carve not the stern, watchful faces of the ancestors, but the vibrant, fleeting beauty of the mountain flora and fauna. This deviation from tradition was unthinkable, a rebellion against generations of stone carvers. She practiced in secret, her small hands aching from the unfamiliar movements, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and exhilaration. Her first secret carving, a delicate, life-like mountain poppy, was hidden beneath loose stones in her workshop, a testament to her quiet defiance. One brutal winter, a plague swept through the village, claiming many, including Elara's father. The village elders, steeped in grief and fear, called for a new carving of the ancestral protector, larger and more powerful than any before, believing it would ward off further misfortune. Elara, now the sole carver, felt the immense weight of expectation. She began the traditional carving, her hands moving mechanically, but her heart was not in it. The stone felt cold, lifeless. One night, a child, pale and shivering, brought her a wilting mountain poppy, a desperate plea for hope. In that moment, something shifted within Elara. She saw not a stern ancestor, but a protector that embodied life, resilience, and beauty. She abandoned the traditional design. With newfound courage, she began to carve a protector intertwined with the living spirit of the mountains—vines, blossoms, and fierce, protective animals emerging from the stone. The elders were initially horrified, but as the carving took shape, radiating an unexpected warmth and vitality, even they could not deny its power. The plague eventually receded, and the villagers, looking at the new protector, found solace not in rigid tradition, but in the enduring spirit of life that Elara had dared to embody in stone.
