Read each section carefully and follow the instructions provided. This worksheet will help you identify and correct comma splices, a common grammatical error.
A comma splice occurs when two independent clauses are joined by only a comma. An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. Comma splices are considered a grammatical error because a comma alone is not strong enough to connect two complete sentences.
There are several ways to correct a comma splice:
1. Replace the comma with a period, creating two separate sentences.
2. Replace the comma with a semicolon.
3. Add a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) after the comma.
4. Subordinate one of the clauses.
1. Which of the following sentences contains a comma splice?
The storm raged, the trees swayed violently.
She studied diligently; she wanted to ace the exam.
He was tired, but he continued working.
Although it was late, they decided to finish the project.
2. Identify the sentence that does NOT contain a comma splice.

She loves to read, her favorite genre is fantasy.
