Read each section's instructions carefully and complete the exercises. This worksheet focuses on identifying and correcting comma splices.
A comma splice occurs when two independent clauses are joined by only a comma. This is considered a grammatical error as a comma is not strong enough to join two complete thoughts on its own. There are several ways to correct a comma splice:
1. Replace the comma with a period, creating two separate sentences.
2. Replace the comma with a semicolon.
3. Add a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so - FANBOYS) after the comma.
4. Rewrite the sentence to make one clause dependent on the other.
Which of the following sentences contains a comma splice?
The storm raged all night, but the house remained undamaged.
She studied for hours, she still felt unprepared for the exam.
Although it was late, they decided to finish the project.
He enjoys reading; his favorite genre is historical fiction.
Rewrite the following sentences to correct the comma splice. You may choose any appropriate method (period, semicolon, coordinating conjunction, or restructuring).
1. The concert was amazing, the band played all my favorite songs.
2. The deadline is approaching quickly, we need to work faster.
3. I love to travel, I hope to visit Japan next year.
Decide if the following statement is true or false.
A comma splice can always be corrected by simply adding a semicolon.

False
Construct two sentences. In the first sentence, intentionally create a comma splice. In the second sentence, correct that comma splice using a different method than you used in the fill-in-the-blanks section.
