The Little Red Hen

Once upon a time, there was a Little Red Hen who lived in a small, cozy house on a big farm. She had some friends: a lazy dog, a sleepy cat, and a noisy duck. One day, the Little Red Hen found a grain of wheat. "Who will help me plant this wheat?" she asked. "Not I!" barked the dog. "Not I!" purred the cat. "Not I!" quacked the duck. So, the Little Red Hen planted it herself. When the wheat grew tall, she asked, "Who will help me cut the wheat?" Again, her friends said, "Not I!" So, she cut it herself. Then she asked, "Who will help me take the wheat to the mill to be ground into flour?" "Not I!" they said. So, she took it to the mill herself. When she had the flour, she asked, "Who will help me bake the bread?" "Not I!" they all said. So, she baked it herself. Finally, the delicious smell of fresh bread filled the house. "Who will help me eat this bread?" she asked. "I will!" barked the dog. "I will!" purred the cat. "I will!" quacked the duck. But the Little Red Hen said, "No! I planted it, I cut it, I took it to the mill, and I baked it. So, I will eat it myself!" And she did.
