The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
In a quiet valley called Sleepy Hollow, there lived a schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane. Ichabod was tall and very thin. He loved to sing and tell stories, but he also loved to eat! He often ate meals at the homes of his students, especially if there was a pretty girl named Katrina Van Tassel there. Katrina was rich and beautiful, and Ichabod wanted to marry her.
But there was another man who liked Katrina, a strong and boisterous fellow named Brom Bones. Brom was a bit of a prankster and liked to tease Ichabod. The people of Sleepy Hollow also told many spooky stories, especially about the Headless Horseman, a ghost who rode at night looking for his lost head. One night, after a party at Katrina's house, Ichabod rode home alone. He was very scared of the dark woods. Suddenly, he heard a horse behind him! It was a large, dark rider, and it had no head! Ichabod tried to escape, but the Headless Horseman chased him, throwing something round and hard at him. Ichabod fell from his horse. The next morning, Ichabod was gone, and only his hat and a smashed pumpkin were found. Some say he was carried away by the Headless Horseman, while others say he was just too scared and ran away forever.
