Read each story carefully. After reading the first part of the story, make a prediction about what will happen next. Then, read the rest of the story to see if your prediction was correct.

Story 1: The Lost Kite

Lily loved her new kite. It was bright red with a long, swishy tail. One windy afternoon, she took it to the park. The kite soared high in the sky, dancing with the clouds. Suddenly, a very strong gust of wind came. Lily held on tight, but the string slipped from her fingers! The kite flew higher and higher, until it was just a tiny red speck disappearing over the tall trees at the edge of the park.

1. What do you predict will happen next to Lily's kite?

Now, read the rest of the story:

Lily was so sad. She ran home and told her dad what happened. "Don't worry, honey," her dad said, "Let's go look for it." They walked to the edge of the park and into the woods. After a long search, they saw a flash of red in a tall oak tree. Her kite was tangled in the branches! With a long stick, her dad carefully pulled it down. Lily hugged her kite, happy to have it back.

2. Was your prediction correct? Explain why or why not.

Story 2: The Mysterious Package

Tom was playing in his yard when he saw a small, brown package on his porch. It wasn't his birthday, and no one in his family was expecting anything. The package felt light, and something inside rattled gently when he shook it. There was no return address, just his name written neatly on the front. Tom carefully peeled back the tape.

3. What do you predict will be inside the package?

Now, read the rest of the story:

Inside the package, Tom found a small, sparkly rock and a note. The note said, "To the best rock collector in town! From your secret admirer." Tom smiled. He knew exactly who it was from – his Aunt Mary, who loved to find cool rocks and knew how much he liked collecting them too!

4. Was your prediction correct? Explain why or why not.

Read the short passage. Then choose the best prediction for what will happen next.
