The Amazing Monarch Butterfly

Monarch butterflies are known for their beautiful orange and black wings. But did you know they are also famous for their incredible migration? Every year, millions of monarch butterflies travel thousands of miles from Canada and the United States to warmer places like Mexico and California for the winter. This long journey helps them escape the cold weather. They fly in large groups, sometimes covering 50 to 100 miles a day!

Monarchs lay their eggs only on milkweed plants. When a caterpillar hatches, it eats milkweed leaves to grow big and strong. After about two weeks, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, it changes into a butterfly. This process is called metamorphosis. When the butterfly emerges, it is ready to continue its life cycle and, for some, begin the amazing journey south.
