Who was St. Nicholas?

St. Nicholas was a real person who lived a very long time ago, around 280 AD, in a place called Patara. Today, Patara is part of the country Turkey. He became a bishop, a leader in the church, and was known for his kindness and generosity, especially towards children and the poor. Many stories tell of his secret gift-giving. One famous story says he helped three poor sisters by secretly leaving gold in their stockings.

Over hundreds of years, the stories of St. Nicholas spread around the world. Different cultures began to celebrate him in their own ways. For example, in some European countries, children leave out shoes or stockings on the eve of December 6th, St. Nicholas Day, hoping to find treats and small gifts.
