The Mystery of the Missing Toy
Lily loved her stuffed elephant, Ellie. Ellie had big, floppy ears and a tiny blue ribbon around her neck. Every night, Lily tucked Ellie into bed right beside her. One sunny morning, Lily woke up and reached for Ellie, but her hand met only empty sheets. Ellie was gone! Lily’s eyes widened. She checked under her pillow, inside her blanket fort, and even in her closet. No Ellie. A tear rolled down her cheek. She ran to her mom, who was making pancakes.
“Mom! Ellie is missing!” Lily cried. Mom calmly wiped her hands on a towel. “Hmm, that’s a mystery! Where was the last place you saw her?” Lily thought hard. “I remember playing with her in the living room before dinner last night, but then I brought her to bed. Or did I?” She tapped her chin. Mom smiled. “Let’s retrace your steps. What did you do after playing in the living room?” Lily remembered helping her dad water the plants, then having a snack in the kitchen, and finally brushing her teeth before bed. They walked through each room. In the kitchen, next to the cookie jar, sat Ellie, looking a little dusty but safe. Lily hugged her tight. “You were just hungry, weren’t you, Ellie?” she whispered.
