The Amazing Monarch Butterfly
Monarch butterflies are famous for their incredible migration. Every year, millions of monarchs travel thousands of miles from the United States and Canada to warmer climates in Mexico and California. This journey can be as long as 3,000 miles! It takes several generations of butterflies to complete the entire migration. The butterflies that fly south in the autumn are called the 'super generation.' They live much longer than regular monarchs, sometimes up to eight months, to make the long trip and lay eggs for the next generation.
Monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed plants. The milkweed makes the caterpillars and butterflies taste bad to predators, protecting them from birds and other animals. Unfortunately, milkweed habitats are disappearing, which makes it harder for monarchs to survive. People can help monarchs by planting milkweed in their gardens and avoiding pesticides.
