Rules for Adding -ing to Verbs

1. Most verbs: Just add -ing. (e.g., walk → walking)

2. Verbs ending in -e: Drop the -e, then add -ing. (e.g., make → making)

3. Verbs ending in a consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pattern and stressed on the last syllable: Double the last consonant, then add -ing. (e.g., run → running, swim → swimming)

4. Verbs ending in -ie: Change -ie to -y, then add -ing. (e.g., lie → lying)
