The Life Cycle of a Butterfly
Butterflies are fascinating insects that go through an amazing transformation called metamorphosis. This process has four main stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult butterfly.
First, an adult butterfly lays tiny eggs, usually on a leaf or stem. These eggs hatch into small caterpillars, which are the larval stage. Caterpillars spend their time eating leaves and growing quickly. They shed their skin several times as they get bigger.
When a caterpillar is fully grown, it forms a chrysalis. This is the pupa stage, and inside, the caterpillar's body changes dramatically. Finally, an adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis, ready to fly, feed on nectar, and lay its own eggs, starting the cycle all over again.
