The Lost Kite
Lily loved her new kite. It was bright red with a long, blue tail. One windy afternoon, she was flying it in the park. Suddenly, a strong gust of wind pulled the string right out of her hands! The kite soared higher and higher, then drifted away over the tall oak trees. Lily felt a lump in her throat. She ran after it, her eyes fixed on the red speck in the sky. She knew her grandpa had spent hours helping her build it, and she didn't want all his hard work to be lost. She followed the kite past the playground, across the creek, and almost to the edge of town. Her legs started to ache, but she kept going. Finally, she saw the kite tangled in the branches of a giant willow tree. It was too high to reach. Just then, her friend Sam rode up on his bike. 'What's wrong?' he asked. Lily pointed to the kite. Sam thought for a moment. 'I have a long stick at home. Maybe we can reach it!' He sped off, returning a few minutes later with a bamboo pole. Together, they carefully nudged the kite free.
