Understanding Syllable Types

Knowing syllable types can help you read and spell longer words. There are six main syllable types: Closed, Open, Vowel-Consonant-e (VCe), Vowel Team, R-Controlled, and Consonant-le. A **Closed Syllable** has one vowel followed by one or more consonants. The vowel sound is short. For example, in 'cat', 'a' is short. An **Open Syllable** ends with a single vowel, and the vowel sound is long. For example, in 'go', 'o' is long. A **Vowel-Consonant-e (VCe) Syllable** has a vowel, then a consonant, then a silent 'e'. The first vowel is long. For example, in 'bake', 'a' is long and 'e' is silent. A **Vowel Team Syllable** has two vowels together that make one sound. For example, in 'boat', 'oa' makes the long 'o' sound. An **R-Controlled Syllable** has a vowel followed by 'r'. The 'r' changes the sound of the vowel. For example, in 'bird', the 'ir' makes one sound. A **Consonant-le Syllable** is usually found at the end of a word. It has a consonant followed by 'le'. For example, in 'table', 'ble' is a consonant-le syllable.
