The Story of the Tower of Babel
Long ago, after the Great Flood, all the people on Earth spoke the same language and lived together in one place. As they traveled eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and decided to settle there. They said to each other, "Come, let us build a city, and a tower whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."
The people began to build their great city and a very tall tower. They used bricks instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Their goal was to build a tower so high that it would reach the heavens, demonstrating their power and keeping them united. However, God saw what they were doing and how their pride was leading them away from Him. He decided to confuse their language so that they could no longer understand each other. Because they could not communicate, they stopped building the city and the tower. From there, God scattered them over the face of all the earth. That is why the city was called Babel, which means 'confusion'.
