Garrett Augustus Morgan was an important African American inventor. He was born in 1877 in Kentucky and grew up to create many things that made life safer and better for people. He is famous for inventing the three-position traffic signal and a safety hood, which was an early version of a gas mask.

Before Morgan's traffic signal, traffic lights only had two positions: 'stop' and 'go'. This caused many accidents. Morgan added a 'caution' position, which warned drivers to stop before the light changed. This made roads much safer. His safety hood helped firefighters and others breathe in smoke-filled environments. This invention saved many lives, including his own when he used it to rescue workers from a tunnel explosion.
