What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is a very important day in American history. It celebrates the day when all enslaved African Americans in the United States finally learned they were free. This happened on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas. Even though President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier, not everyone knew about it right away, especially in places far from the main fighting of the Civil War.

When Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, they announced that all enslaved people were free. This news brought great joy and celebration. Today, Juneteenth is a day to remember this important moment in history, celebrate freedom, and learn more about African American culture and achievements. Many people celebrate with parades, picnics, music, and storytelling.
