Read each section carefully and follow the instructions to complete the activities. Pay close attention to how apostrophes are used to show possession and form contractions.

Apostrophes are used to show that something belongs to someone or something. For singular nouns, add an apostrophe and an 's' ('s). For plural nouns ending in 's', just add an apostrophe (s').

Examples:

The dog's bone (one dog)

The dogs' leashes (many dogs)

Rewrite each phrase using an apostrophe to show possession.

1. The tail of the cat:

2. The books of the students:

3. The car belonging to my mother:

4. The toys of the children:

An apostrophe is also used in contractions to show where letters have been removed when two words are combined.

Examples:

do not = don't

I am = I'm

Match the words on the left with their correct contraction on the right.

1. cannot

a. She's

2. we will

b. couldn't

3. she is

c. we'll

4. could not

d. can't

Read each sentence. If the apostrophe is used incorrectly, rewrite the sentence correctly. If it is correct, write 'Correct'.

1. The childrens' toys were scattered everywhere.

2. Its a beautiful day outside.

3. My best friends' dog is very playful.

Write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) about your favorite animal. Try to use at least two apostrophes for possession and two for contractions in your paragraph. Underline the words where you used an apostrophe.
