The Secret Garden
Mary Lennox was a disagreeable-looking child, with a thin face and a skinny body, and thin, light hair and a cross expression. She was born in India and had always been waited on by servants. When her parents died, she was sent to live with her uncle at Misselthwaite Manor in England. Misselthwaite was a huge, old house with hundreds of rooms, and outside there were vast gardens. One day, Mary discovered a secret garden, locked and hidden away for ten years. It was a place of mystery and wonder, and as Mary spent more time there, she began to change. Her cheeks grew rosier, her eyes brighter, and she even started to smile.
1. Have you ever felt like an outsider or had to move to a new place like Mary? How did you feel, and what helped you adjust?
2. Can you think of another story where a character changes for the better because of a special place or friendship? How is that story similar to 'The Secret Garden'?
3. The story mentions Mary being 'waited on by servants' in India. What do you know about different cultures or historical times where this was common? How does this information help you understand Mary's initial character?
