The Mystery of the Missing Backpack

Maya woke up with a start. It was the first day of fifth grade, and she was so excited! She quickly got dressed, brushed her teeth, and headed to the kitchen for breakfast. After a bowl of cereal, she went to grab her brand new, sparkly blue backpack, but it wasn't on its hook. She looked under her bed, in her closet, and even behind the curtains. No backpack! A wave of panic washed over her. How could she go to school without her backpack?

Maya’s mom came into the room, noticing Maya’s distressed face. “What’s wrong, sweetie?” she asked. Maya explained the situation, and her mom helped her search. They checked the living room, the bathroom, and even the garage. Just as Maya was about to burst into tears, her older brother, Leo, walked in, yawning. He was holding Maya’s backpack! “Oh, this?” he mumbled, “I borrowed it last night to carry my comic books to Ben’s house. Forgot to put it back. Sorry!”

Maya hugged her backpack tightly, relieved. She quickly packed her books and pencils, careful to make sure everything was there. Even though she was running a little late, she felt much better. She thanked Leo, who promised to ask next time, and then rushed out the door, ready for her first day of fifth grade. It turned out to be a great day, despite the morning scare.
