The Whispering Woods
Lily clutched her worn teddy bear, Barnaby, tighter as the shadows deepened in the Whispering Woods. The ancient oak trees, twisted and gnarled, seemed to whisper secrets in the evening breeze. She had promised her little brother, Tom, that she would find his lost toy soldier, even though he'd warned her not to go past the old stone bridge. Now, the sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery oranges and purples, and Lily realized she was much deeper in the woods than she intended. A sudden rustle in the bushes made her jump. Was it a fox? Or something more mysterious, like the stories Grandma used to tell?
