The Amazing Monarch Butterfly Migration

Every autumn, millions of monarch butterflies embark on an incredible journey. These beautiful orange and black insects fly thousands of miles from Canada and the United States to warmer climates in Mexico and California. This long trip is called migration. Monarchs are the only known butterfly species to make such a long, two-way migration each year.

How do they know where to go? Scientists believe monarchs use the sun as a compass. They also have a special internal clock that helps them navigate. The butterflies fly during the day and rest at night, often gathering in large groups on trees. It takes several generations of monarchs to complete the round trip. The monarchs that fly south are called the 'super generation' because they live much longer than regular monarchs.

Once in their overwintering grounds, millions of monarchs cluster together on Oyamel fir trees, forming dense colonies. These colonies provide warmth and protection from predators. In the spring, these same butterflies begin the journey north, laying eggs along the way. Their offspring continue the migration, eventually reaching the northern breeding grounds, ready to start the cycle again the following year.
