Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

The monarch butterfly is a fascinating insect known for its incredible migration. Every year, millions of monarchs travel thousands of miles from Canada and the United States to warmer climates in Mexico and California. This journey can take several generations of butterflies to complete. The larvae, or caterpillars, feed exclusively on milkweed plants. Milkweed is crucial for the monarch's survival, as it provides both food and protection from predators. Once a caterpillar has eaten enough, it forms a chrysalis, undergoing a complete metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly. When they emerge, these new butterflies are ready to join the migration, flying south to their overwintering grounds.

8. What is the main idea of this passage?

9. Why is milkweed important for monarch butterflies?
