Read each section carefully and follow the instructions to complete the activities.

Coordinate adjectives are two or more adjectives that modify the same noun and are of equal importance. You can usually tell if adjectives are coordinate if you can switch their order and the sentence still makes sense, or if you can place the word 'and' between them. When coordinate adjectives are used, a comma is placed between them.

Example: The tall, strong tree swayed in the wind. ('tall' and 'strong' are coordinate adjectives.)

Non-example: She wore a soft blue sweater. ('soft' and 'blue' are not coordinate because 'soft' describes the 'blue sweater', not just the 'sweater'.)

Read each sentence. Choose the sentence that uses coordinate adjectives correctly.

1. Which sentence uses coordinate adjectives correctly?

a

The small, red car sped down the street.

b

He enjoyed a delicious, hot meal.

c

She bought a new, leather jacket.

d

The old, wooden bridge creaked.

2. Which sentence does NOT need a comma?

a

A gentle, warm breeze blew.

b

He wore a comfortable, cotton shirt.

c

She lived in a big, white house.

d

They saw a beautiful, red sunset.
