The Wonders of the Ocean's Deep

The ocean covers more than 70% of Earth's surface, and much of it remains unexplored. The deep sea, beginning at about 650 feet below the surface, is a mysterious world where sunlight cannot penetrate. Despite the extreme pressure and freezing temperatures, a surprising variety of life thrives in this dark environment. Many deep-sea creatures have adapted unique ways to survive, such as bioluminescence, the ability to produce their own light. Anglerfish, for example, use a glowing lure to attract prey in the darkness. Other creatures have developed massive eyes to capture any faint light, or have evolved to withstand immense pressure without being crushed. Scientists continue to discover new species and ecosystems in the deep sea, reminding us how much more there is to learn about our own planet.
