A compound-complex sentence has at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

Independent clauses can stand alone as complete sentences. Dependent clauses cannot stand alone and often begin with subordinating conjunctions (e.g., because, although, while, when, if, since) or relative pronouns (e.g., who, which, that).
