Understanding Word Roots

Many English words are built from smaller parts called roots. These roots often come from ancient Greek or Latin. A root is the basic part of a word that carries its main meaning. For example, the root 'port' means 'carry'. From this root, we get words like 'transport' (to carry across), 'portable' (able to be carried), and 'reporter' (one who carries back news).

Recognizing roots can significantly expand your vocabulary and help you understand unfamiliar words. When you encounter a new word, try to break it down. Can you identify a root you already know? Often, words will also have prefixes (added to the beginning) or suffixes (added to the end) that further modify the root's meaning. For instance, in 'unbelievable', 'un-' is a prefix, 'believe' is the root, and '-able' is a suffix.
