What is a Topic Sentence?

A topic sentence is usually the first sentence in a paragraph. It tells the reader what the paragraph is going to be about. Think of it as the main idea of the paragraph, summarizing its content in one clear statement.

A good topic sentence:

States the main idea of the paragraph.

Is usually at the beginning of the paragraph.

Is clear, concise, and interesting.

Read each paragraph. Choose the sentence that best serves as the topic sentence for the paragraph.

1. My favorite season is autumn. I love watching the leaves change color from green to vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. The crisp, cool air is perfect for long walks, and I enjoy picking apples and pumpkins. Plus, autumn brings delicious holidays like Thanksgiving.
