Dr. Mae C. Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first African American woman to travel into space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on September 12, 1992. Born in Alabama and raised in Chicago, Jemison was inspired by science fiction and devoted herself to science at a young age. She earned a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University and her M.D. from Cornell University. Before joining NASA, she served in the Peace Corps as a medical officer.
