Demonstratives are words that point out specific people, places, or things. They can function as either demonstrative adjectives (modifying a noun) or demonstrative pronouns (standing in for a noun). The four main demonstratives are: this, that, these, and those.

This/These refer to things close by.

That/Those refer to things farther away.

This and that are singular, while these and those are plural.
