Read each section carefully and follow the instructions. This worksheet will help you practice identifying pronouns and their antecedents, and ensuring proper agreement.

What is an Antecedent?

An antecedent is the noun or noun phrase that a pronoun refers to. For example, in the sentence 'Sarah loves to read; she often visits the library,' 'Sarah' is the antecedent of the pronoun 'she.' The pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number (singular/plural) and gender (masculine/feminine/neuter).

Identify the antecedent for each underlined pronoun. Write the antecedent in the blank provided.

1. The dog wagged its tail when it saw its owner. Antecedent of 'its':

2. Maria finished her homework before she went to the park. Antecedent of 'her':

3. The students studied hard for their test, and they all passed. Antecedent of 'their':

4. My brother loves to play basketball; he practices every day. Antecedent of 'he':

Choose the correct pronoun that agrees with its antecedent in each sentence.
