Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

Elara gripped the worn leather straps of her backpack, her eyes scanning the dense forest ahead. A chilling wind whispered through the ancient trees, making the shadows dance and play tricks on her vision. She had been separated from her hiking group after a sudden, unexpected fog rolled in, thick and disorienting. Now, the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, but offering little comfort. Her stomach growled, a stark reminder that she hadn't eaten since morning. Every rustle in the undergrowth made her jump, her heart pounding against her ribs. She knew she had to keep moving, to find a path, a sign, anything to lead her back to safety. But with each step, the forest seemed to grow darker, more menacing, and the hope she clung to began to fray.
