Carefully read the following debate transcript (or watch a debate) and answer the questions that follow. Pay close attention to the arguments, evidence, and rhetorical strategies used by each speaker.

Debate Topic: Should social media companies be held responsible for the spread of misinformation?

Speaker A (Affirmative): 'Social media platforms have become primary sources of news for millions. With great power comes great responsibility. When these platforms allow demonstrably false information to proliferate, they directly contribute to public confusion and harm. For example, during the recent health crisis, false cures and conspiracy theories spread like wildfire, causing real-world consequences. Holding these companies accountable would incentivize them to implement more robust fact-checking and content moderation policies.'

Speaker B (Negative): 'While the spread of misinformation is a serious issue, holding social media companies legally responsible creates a dangerous precedent. Who determines what is 'misinformation'? This could lead to censorship and a chilling effect on free speech. Furthermore, these platforms are merely conduits for user-generated content. Expecting them to police every post is technologically infeasible and financially crippling. The responsibility ultimately lies with individuals to critically evaluate information and with educators to foster media literacy.'
