What is a Comma Splice?

A comma splice occurs when two independent clauses are joined together with only a comma. An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a complete sentence. A comma alone is not strong enough to connect two independent clauses.

There are several ways to correct a comma splice:

1. Use a period to separate the two independent clauses into two sentences.

2. Use a semicolon to join the two independent clauses.

3. Use a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

4. Use a subordinating conjunction (e.g., because, although, since) to make one clause dependent.

Identify which sentence contains a comma splice.

1. Which of the following sentences contains a comma splice?

a

The cat purred contentedly, it rubbed against my leg.

b
