Read each section carefully and follow the instructions. This worksheet will test your understanding of semicolon usage.

Semicolons are often used to connect two closely related independent clauses that are not joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

Directions: Rewrite each pair of sentences, joining them with a semicolon where appropriate. If a semicolon is not appropriate, write 'No semicolon needed'.

1. The storm raged all night; the power went out for hours.

 

2. Sarah loves to read fantasy novels. Her favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien.

 

3. The movie was excellent. I watched it twice.

 

4. My brother is a talented musician. He plays both the piano and the guitar.

 

Semicolons can also separate items in a list when those items themselves contain commas. This helps prevent confusion.
