Passage: The Amazon rainforest, covering much of northwestern Brazil and extending into Colombia, Peru, and other South American countries, is the world’s largest tropical rainforest, famed for its biodiversity. It's home to millions of species of insects, plants, and birds, and contains more than 2.5 million different insect species. The Amazon River, which flows through the rainforest, is the second-longest river in the world and carries more water than any other river. Deforestation is a major threat to this vital ecosystem, driven primarily by cattle ranching and agriculture.
