Passage: The Stonecutter's Transformation

Once, there was a stonecutter who was unhappy with himself and his station in life. He saw a wealthy merchant pass by with many servants and thought, 'How powerful the merchant is!' He wished to be a merchant, and magically, his wish was granted. But then a high official passed, and he saw how people bowed before him. 'How much more powerful the official is!' he thought, and he became an official. Then he saw the sun, scorching everything, and wished to be the sun. His wish was granted. But then a cloud came and blocked the sun's rays. 'How powerful the cloud is!' he thought, and he became a cloud. Then he saw the wind blow the cloud away. 'How powerful the wind is!' he thought, and he became the wind. But then he came to a mighty rock that would not move. 'How powerful the rock is!' he thought, and he became the rock. Finally, he heard the sound of a hammer and chisel and saw a stonecutter chipping away at the rock. 'How powerful the stonecutter is!' he thought, and he became a stonecutter again, content with his original self, having learned that true power lies within.
