Read each section carefully and follow the instructions to complete the exercises on comma splices.
A comma splice occurs when two independent clauses (complete thoughts that could stand alone as sentences) are joined together with only a comma. This is considered a grammatical error. There are several ways to correct a comma splice:
1. Use a period to separate the clauses into two sentences.
2. Use a semicolon to join the clauses.
3. Use a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
4. Rephrase the sentence, perhaps by making one clause dependent.
Directions: Identify which of the following sentences contains a comma splice.
1. Choose the sentence with a comma splice:
The rain fell heavily, so we stayed inside.
She studied for hours, she wanted to pass the test.
He enjoys reading; his favorite genre is fantasy.
Although it was late, they decided to finish the project.
