Standard practice

Standard answers
1. 36: 12 + 9 + 15.
2. 24: 8 + 11 + 5.
3. All three tie at 20: 12 + 8, 9 + 11, and 15 + 5.
4. 10 more: 15 − 5 = 10.
Challenge practice
Example: A table can count events rather than unique people. A book checkout is not necessarily a different borrower.
1. Can we conclude that exactly 60 different students borrowed books?
2. Tuesday’s fiction count is corrected from 9 to 13. What are the new Tuesday and overall totals?
3. Is Wednesday busiest because it has the most fiction checkouts?
4. Give two additions that check the overall total using different groupings.
Challenge answers
1. No. There were 60 checkouts, but a student could borrow more than one book.
2. Tuesday: 24. Overall: 64. Each total increases by 4.
3. Not by total checkouts. All days originally have 20 when nonfiction is included.
4. Rows: 20 + 20 + 20 = 60. Columns: 36 + 24 = 60. Both count each checkout once.
