Choose a data and graphing lesson

Start with reading tables and bar graphs. Use scaled bar graphs when students can explain what each tick interval means. Move to fractional measurement line plots and first-quadrant coordinates when those skills fit your lesson.

The 15 updated lessons linked here include Grade 5 applications and prerequisite review. Each offers supported, standard, and challenge questions, an explained answer key, and a printable visual where needed. Select a level on the worksheet page before printing. Custom variants require an account and teacher review.

Worked example: count people, then compare

In a class survey, 6 students choose blue, 8 red, 4 green, 2 yellow, and 5 purple. There are 6 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 5 = 25 students. Red is the most popular choice, but 8 out of 25 is not more than half. Counts of students must be whole numbers.

A short teaching sequence

  1. Read the title, axis labels, units, and scale together.
  2. Ask one question about a value and one about a comparison.
  3. Have students check a total and explain one claim the data cannot support.
